How to Unpack and Assemble an Artificial Tree

There are a lot of great things about artificial Christmas trees. They come in a huge variety of styles and sizes, they have a wide price range that works with any budget, and they can be reused year after year if they’re cared for properly. One of the things that many people view as a disadvantage, though, is the assembly that comes with this type of Christmas tree. Artificial trees usually come packaged in a box in a lot of pieces with directions that may or may not be difficult to understand. Sounds fun, right? Probably not. Here are some tips for unpacking and assembling an artificial tree in a way that doesn’t make you want to rip your hair out in the process:

1. Find the right spot. This is probably the most important step in this process. You want to pick a spot where the tree will fit comfortably and where it’s close to an outlet for your lights. This is also the place where you’ll begin unpacking your tree. Keep it close so you’re not dragging limbs all over the house during the set up.
2. Unpack each piece and lay them out separately. You want to be able to clearly view each piece of the tree while you’re setting it up. Usually, artificial trees come in only a few pieces, so this shouldn’t be difficult to do. You just want to be able to easily see which piece is which.
3. Determine what style of tree you have. Most trees come in one of two styles: color-coded limbs that hook into the “trunk,” or already attached limbs that unfold as you set up your tree. These are usually organized in sections that have decreasing sizes (i.e., the largest section for the base of the tree, the smallest for the top). If you’ve got the color-coded variety, group your colors together so you know all the pieces are in one place.
4. Put the base of the tree in the stand. Start with the largest section of the tree, or the biggest branches if you’ve got a color-coded tree. For this style, match the color on the branches with the color on the trunk, hooking in each branch firmly until they are all attached.
5. Add the remaining sections or branches. The rest of the tree set up is pretty self-explanatory. You work your way up the tree, going from the largest to the smallest sections/branches. If you’ve got a pre-lit tree, plug in as you go.
6. Fluff out the branches. Most artificial trees have smashed branches from being in the packaging, but this is easily fixed by spreading them out and making them straightening them. This will give your tree that full look you’re after.

Unpacking and assembling your Christmas tree doesn’t have to be a huge chore. If you keep the tree parts organized and with their like parts, then it will be that much easier when you’re taking them out of the packaging. Follow these steps and you’ll find that your Christmas tree set up is not so bad after all.
