Different Types of Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are one of the most important decorations for consideration during the holiday season. They bring brightness and cheer to all sorts of places and things, inside and out. You can find them on homes, buildings, windows, inside restaurants and shopping malls, and, of course, on Christmas trees. If you plan on putting up lights this year, then you have several options to keep in mind, like what color(s) you want to use and where you want to put them. Perhaps most importantly, however, is what type of lights you want to use. This can make a huge difference, as most lights are specially designed for specific uses. To get the most out of your Christmas lights, you’ll want to use the proper type for your setting.

Christmas lights are quite varied, with some being designed for indoor use only and others for outside, and that’s only the beginning. There are also all different types, sizes, and styles of lights. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular kinds of lights you can get and how they are best used:

Sizes
• Mini lights – These are the most common lights available, with the shape resembling a candle with a pointed tip. They are typically used on Christmas trees and to decorate within the home or other indoor spaces, though there are some that are designed for exterior use. Mini lights come in all different colors, including white and multi-colored strands.
• C6 – These lights have more of a bulb shape and are a bit bigger than the mini lights. They are sometimes referred to as strawberry lights due to their shape, and they’re suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They’re also not so big that they can’t be used on a Christmas tree.
• C7 – These lights are very similar to the C6s, except they are slightly bigger. They have the same strawberry shape and work well for outdoor use.
• C9 – These are the largest of the lights. They’re the same shape as the C6s and 7s, but are slightly larger, giving off more light.

Type
• There are two types of Christmas lights that are sold – incandescent and LED. Incandescent lights are what have been traditionally used, but these are being slowly usurped by the more energy-efficient LED lights. Incandescent lights will still work just fine, and they are less expensive than LEDs. The LEDs, however, will likely save you money in the long run because they use less energy and they don’t have to be replaced as often as the incandescent lights.

Style
• There are also lots of different styles of Christmas lights, from the traditional bulbs to icicle lights to rope lights. Net lights are great for covering bushes and shrubs, while trunk lights will encircle a tree trunk with even lighting. The style of light you choose really just depends on what you’re lighting and which type will work best for your uses.

Clearly, there’s much more to putting up Christmas lights than just choosing a color and where to put them. Lights are designed for particular uses, so make sure that your chosen lights are suitable for where you’re putting them. Ensuring this cause will enable your lights to shine to their fullest potential, and they will be equally usable for future holidays.
